The Ganga Aarti is the most moving thing most visitors see in Varanasi: priests in a row, brass lamps, conch shells and bells, and thousands of people on the steps and boats.
Evening aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat
The grand evening aarti is held every day at sunset. Arrive at least 45 minutes early for a place on the steps, or watch from a boat on the river.
Morning aarti at Assi Ghat
Subah-e-Banaras at Assi Ghat begins before sunrise, with the aarti followed by music and yoga. It is quieter and pairs well with a sunrise boat ride.
Tips
- Keep your valuables close: the ghats get crowded.
- Boats can be booked for the aarti; agree on the price before you board.
- On festival days such as Dev Deepawali, plan and book well ahead.
